EA’s upcoming Black Panther game could be open-world, as a recent job listing has suggested that the superhero title will be part of that genre. If true, EA could be releasing two open-world superhero games, as the company’s Iron Man game might also be open-world.
A job listing by EA’s Cliffhanger Games studio (via VGC) has suggested that this Marvel title will be open-world. The job description is looking for someone who “will be instrumental in designing and populating encounters, systems, and gameplay within a dynamic and evolving open world.”
Setting the Black Panther game in Wakanda would lend itself to some fun open-world design and would be fitting of an “evolving open world.” Obviously, things can change, but fans would be receptive to an explorable Wakanda, so long as exploring the game as T’Challa is fun.
Cliffhanger Games is headed by devs who worked on Warner Bros.’ acclaimed Middle Earth open-world titles, so they would be a good fit. Although the studio can’t use that franchise’s Nemesis System, having similar combat and traversal options would be ideal for the Marvel superhero.
This isn’t the only Black Panther game coming out, as Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra also features the character. However, unlike EA’s game, 1943 is obviously set in the past and one of the earlier Black Panthers will be one of the co-leads. Captain America is the other protagonist, so it will be interesting to see how this game compares to what EA will be offering.
Regardless of genre, it seems the Wakandan superhero has had a lot of good luck in video games lately. Black Panther has appeared in all of the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games and was a DLC character in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. We also saw a version of the character and Wakanda in Marvel’s Avengers, giving fans a solid post-launch campaign.
At the time of writing, EA’s Black Panther game doesn’t have a release date, though it’s expected to come out on modern systems. The same goes for their Iron Man game.
