  • Rockstar Games filmed years of footage during GTA V's development
  • A huge Making Of documentary was never released to the public
  • GTA 5's actors want to see the footage released some day

Rockstar Games were creating 'Making Of' documentary back in 2013 for the release of Grand Theft Auto 5. However, the huge GTA 5 documentary was never released despite the game's massive popularity.

In a recent autograph signing event for Streamily, the actors behind the titular trio of GTA 5's protagonists came together and revealed some backstage information about the unseen behind-the-scenes documentary.

Actors Steven Ogg (Trevor Phillips), Ned Luke (Michael De Santa), and Shawn Fonteno (Franklin Clinton) made their first round of public appearances as the reunited GTA 5 trio in years following a break from Ogg.

In the 50-minute long Q&A interview with Streamily, Michael De Santa actor Ned Luke revealed that the cast they filmed a ton of production footage to be used for a documentary. Unfortunately, none of that footage over years of development has ever been seen.

Luke told fans just how huge this unseen GTA 5 documentary would have been, saying: “What’s nuts is we had that behind-the-scenes camera going the whole time and they never did anything with it. That would have been gold”.

The actor hinted how excited they were for the potential behind-the-scenes documentary and commented, “I think at one point, didn’t we discuss like how cool to make the making of… so at this point, we’d have the documentary on the making of GTA”.

For whatever reason, Rockstar decided to axe this project and never made the footage public or used it in any capacity as far as we know. It would've been extremely cool to finally get a glimpse at what goes on at Rockstar Games. While most studios are happy to share their development footage, Rockstar Games takes an opposite stance on this, keeping the processes behind development a closely guarded secret.

It's not a long shot to say that Rockstar Games is one of the most mysterious game studios in the world when it comes to their behind-the-scenes development. This secrecy isn't an accident, as it's a part of the company's policy to retain their air of mystique.

Despite being a multi-billion dollar company with thousands of employees and some of the most successful titles in gaming history, we know next to nothing when it comes to the full scope of operations behind Rockstar's development cycle. While the studio has been cracked open with the huge GTA 6 leaks last year, most Rockstar projects are kept firmly under wraps.

Fans and other industry professionals would certainly generate a ton of excitement at the release of this footage as Rockstar Games is kind of a black box. However, Rockstar opted to maintain its air of secrecy, and we can't blame them for trying to maintain the image they have generated over decades of secret keeping.

They don't even let former directors reveal decade-old secrets about the original games. Perhaps we can remain optimistic for GTA VI and its potential backstage footage, as the game is shaping up to be much larger than anything Rockstar has done before.
